Our vision for the Boiler House is to develop a friendly community workshop space for local people, makers and businesses in the Moss Side area. In the 1980s the Boiler House operated as a district heating system for thousands of homes in Moss Side and has gradually fallen out of use. In 2019 Sow the City are transforming the building into a new type of resource for local people - a space for making things, learning new practical skills, and being creative. When the building is fully developed it will include office and activity space for small businesses, hobbyists as well as access to a shared workshop, space for community events, and a leading example of sustainable building design. The project is being delivered over the next twelve years by Sow the City CIC in partnership with Big Society Capital, One Manchester and GMCVO. Activities will promote mental health and wellbeing, sustainability, care for the environment, and encourage skills-building and sharing.
Sow the City is a Manchester based social enterprise – we are a not for profit company with a mission to empower communities to grow and live sustainably. Established in 2009 with a few packets of seeds and some compost, we’re now the leading specialist food-growing company in the city. We work with communities, providing workshops in self-sufficiency, food growing, carpentry and cooking. Sow the City began running practical and creative courses at the Boiler House in May 2018. +44 (0)161 465 6954
